Tour San Miguel’s Newest Large Hotel: Pueblo Bonito Vantage

We were fortunate enough to spend some time at Pueblo Bonito Vantage Hotel in San Miguel de Allende the same month it opened. This is run by the same company that has long operated resorts on the coast, so they weren’t starting from scratch on the systems and management. It’s a gorgeous hotel that has several restaurants, a pool complex, and a full spa.

There’s not much room anywhere near the center of historic San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, so the last few large hotels to open have been on the edge apart from the Rosewood, which took over the space of an existing hotel. The latest follows that trend, with new Pueblo Bonito Vantage located just past the Fabrica la Aurora art gallery in a previous textile factory. (We visited it on a San Miguel art tour we wrote about previously.)

This one has 111 rooms, which would make it on the small side in the beach resort areas, but here in San Miguel de Allende, that makes it one of the largest. It feels spacious and airy, with plenty of outdoor lounging space, a rooftop lounge, and ample free parking for anyone who drives.

I was impressed with the food and beverage side of things when we stayed, with an array of interesting dishes in the main restaurant for breakfast and lunch, tacos by the pool, and an upscale dinner with a wine pairing in the formal restaurant Frida. At that last one and from the roof bar, you’ve got a great view of the historic center, the steeples lit up at night, and the surrounding mountains.

Come take a tour of Pueblo Bonito Vantage Hotel here:

There’s a strong attention to detail in this property, from the artwork in the lobby to the contemporary sculptures outside to the fine furniture in the rooms. There’s a strong emphasis on attentive service as well:

After a sit-down check-in with a cool towel in the lobby filled with artwork, you can get a quick shoulder massage from one of the spa masseuses, then step over to the lobby bar and watch your welcome drink materialize, either with or without mezcal. A staffer then shows you to your room and explains how everything works while your luggage arrives via a bellman.

You won’t have to go very far for a drink since there’s also a bar on the roof, one by the pool, and one in each restaurant. I set up a wine tasting in the lobby area too, where we tried several bottles from the San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo region of Bajio.

You’ll also find a bakery and coffee shop on the ground floor, so even if you don’t leave the grounds, you’ll have plenty of food and drink options. San Miguel de Allende’s historic center is less than 10 minutes away by taxi though and the hotel offers a shuttle service for those who want to spend the day there shopping, dining, and seeing the sights.

Pueblo Bonito Vantage also offers workshops and activities at the hotel. Besides the wine tasting experience I enjoyed, we also set up something through the spa where we produced our own products using herbs from the organic garden outside. We made a body scrub after grinding up herbs by hand and mixing them with salt and our chosen essential oil. We also made a refreshing spritz spray in a small bottle, also with some of the herbs.

Later we enjoyed an excellent couple’s massage in the spa and spent some time relaxing in the sauna, the pools, and the relaxation area (pictured at the top). Only a few hotels in San Miguel de Allende have a full spa like this and in most cases it’s a much smaller affair.

If you wanted to combine historic, inland Mexico with a beach break on the Pacific, you could book a stay here along with one of the Pueblo Bonito properties in Mazatlan or Los Cabos. You could also play golf in San Miguel and play golf at Quivira near Cabo San Lucas.
